Jordyn chose to sleep outside a CVS because it was open 24 hours a day. With people constantly coming and going, she hoped that sleeping beneath the pharmacy’s overhang would offer some measure of safety. But there was little comfort in spending the night outside, wondering what might happen or where she would go next.
For this young woman, homelessness came after a painful separation from her family. She had lost a stable place to live and was separated from her siblings, leaving her to navigate the uncertainty of life on the streets alone. She wanted to work. She wanted a home. More than anything, she wanted a future where she could help her siblings avoid the same experience. But first, she needed somewhere to begin.
A Stranger Who Took The Time To Care
Determined to find a way out of homelessness, she went to a library and asked for help. A man there listened to her situation and helped her research shelters, giving her something she desperately needed: a direction to move in.
Eventually, Jordyn made her way to Fresno Mission’s G Street campus, where a space was available. The transition wasn’t easy. She was still grieving the separation from her siblings and trying to figure out how to rebuild her life. At Fresno Mission, she found people willing to walk alongside her. Staff and volunteers whose presence here made possible by donors who believe a young woman in crisis deserves more than a place to sleep. She deserves someone in her corner.
She began applying for jobs, volunteering, and taking advantage of every opportunity to move forward. Staff and others around her encouraged her to keep going, even when progress felt slow— support funded by people who understand that rebuilding a life takes more than a roof, it takes people. She never had to do it alone, because of the donors who make that support possible. Gradually, things began to change.
Building A Future, One Step At A Time
Today, Jordyn is working at City Center’s coffee shop and taking steps toward independence. A job opportunity that exists because donors invest in programs that teach real, marketable skills. She is continuing to address personal and medical needs, care that donor generosity helps cover, while preparing for the day she can move into a place of her own. She also hopes to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Her dreams reach beyond herself. She wants to have a home where her siblings can stay while they learn to become independent, too. She knows what it feels like to be without shelter and she doesn’t want them to experience that same uncertainty.
Her time experiencing homelessness has also given her a different perspective on the people she sees living on the streets. She remembers feeling as though her future was over. Now, she wants others to understand that someone experiencing homelessness may be carrying struggles that are not immediately visible.
Her Message Is Simple: “Don’t Look Away.“
A person living on the streets is still a person with dreams, struggles, and a future worth investing in. For this Jordyn, Fresno Mission became more than a place to stay. It became a place where she found encouragement, began working, and started believing that tomorrow could look different — because someone, somewhere, gave so that it could.
Her journey is still unfolding, but she is moving forward with a renewed sense of purpose, faith, and determination. One day, she hopes to extend the same kind of help to her siblings that she received when she needed it most.
