Jaidyn chose to sleep outside a CVS because it was open 24 hours a day. With people constantly coming and going, she hoped that sleeping beneath the pharmacy’s overhang would offer some measure of safety. But there was little comfort in spending the night outside, wondering what might happen or where she would go next.
Jaidyn was adopted at age five alongside her siblings. As she got older, home became a place she needed to escape rather than a place of safety, and she made the difficult decision to leave. She lost a stable place to live and was separated from her siblings, left to navigate the uncertainty of life on the streets alone. She wanted to work. She wanted a home. More than anything, she wanted a future where she could help her siblings avoid the same experience. But first, she needed somewhere to begin.
A Stranger Who Took the Time to Care
Determined to find a way out of homelessness, Jaidyn went to a library and asked for help. A man there listened to her situation and helped her research shelters, giving her something she desperately needed: a direction to move in.
Eventually, Jaidyn found her way to Fresno Mission and transitioned into City Center’s Youth Services Residential Program — a space where donors make sure teens like her have more than a bed, but a full community of people invested in helping them rebuild. The transition wasn’t easy. She was still grieving the separation from her siblings and trying to figure out how to rebuild her life. Within the program, she found staff and mentors willing to walk alongside her, encouraging her to keep going even when progress felt slow.
Building a Future, One Step at a Time
Today, Jaidyn is volunteering at EZ-47 and hopes it will one day turn into a job, while continuing to address personal and medical needs and preparing for the day she can move into a place of her own. She also hopes to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Her dreams reach beyond herself. She wants to have a home where her siblings can stay while they learn to become independent, too. She knows what it feels like to be without shelter, and she doesn’t want them to experience that same uncertainty.
Her time experiencing homelessness has also given her a different perspective on the people she sees living on the streets. She remembers feeling as though her future was over. Now, she wants others to understand that someone experiencing homelessness may be carrying struggles that aren’t immediately visible.
Her Message Is Simple: “Don’t Look Away.”
A person living on the streets is still a person with dreams, struggles and a future worth investing in. For Jaidyn, Fresno Mission became more than a place to stay. It became a place where she found encouragement, began rebuilding her life and started believing that tomorrow could look different.
Not long ago, Jaidyn didn’t know where she’d sleep each night. Today, she’s building a future she once thought was out of reach — one shift, one step, one day at a time. That change did not happen on its own. It happened because donors believed a young woman in crisis was worth investing in.
